Chen Qiulin

Chen Qiulin grew up in Wanzhou City, Sichuan, which was partially submerged by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in 2003. Her celebrated Migration project addressed the physical and psychological upheaval caused by this massive build, which forced more than one million people from their ancestral homes. Issues of displacement, emotional upheaval and the cultural identification of memory with place are continual subjects of investigation in her work. Chen’s exhibition One Hundred Names, a ten-year survey of her practice, will be on show at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Sydney from 16 January to 27 February before moving to Shepparton Art Museum in June.
