Rebecca Coates

Rebecca Coates is a Melbourne-based curator, writer and lecturer in contemporary art history and art curatorship in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. Rebecca was awarded her PhD in art history from the university in 2013, and has worked as a curator at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne International Arts Festival (MIAF) and MOMA Oxford in the UK. Her recent exhibitions include The Material Turn, 2015, at the Victorian College of the Arts’ Margaret Lawrence Gallery.

Rebecca writes and speaks regularly on contemporary art history and theory, and has published in Art & Australia, Art Monthly, Broadsheet, Eyeline, Frieze, e-maj, Museum Worlds, Art & the Public Sphere and Art Journal. Since August 2015, she has been acting director of SAM (Shepparton Art Museum), as it develops an ambitious new contemporary museum.
